Norfolk County Football Association run basic refereeing courses throughout the year and this season major changes have been introduced by The FA, this means the format for courses has been completely re-vamped.
The new modular type of courses will be predominately held over weekends, this will involve 3 full days of instruction and a call back session at a pre-advised date. An evening only course will be available to those who are unable to attend the weekend courses. The new modular type of courses will involve some pre-course work being undertaken by the potential attendee before attending the first module. The modules they will then have to complete are as follows:-
• Module 1 is an induction session and will include a test of your knowledge on the Laws of the Game. It is just a test with no pass or fail mark, it is to evaluate the candidate’s knowledge and adjust the tuition content to suit the needs of those attending. Also on day one a Safeguarding Children Workshop is included as part of the module. • Module 2 is the instruction of the Laws of the Game and practical advice for refereeing a game of football, this is done on days two and three. • Module 3 the examinations, at the end of day three, all candidates will then take the two examinations, one is a multi-choice written paper, the other is a theory DVD assessment. • Module 4 is officiating in a minimum of six 11 v 11 games, during these games the candidate will be mentored, assessed and given general help and advice as necessary. These games will generally be appointed by the County FA Area Appointment Secretaries. At this point you will be registered as a level 9 trainee referee • Module 5 is an In-service Training Session, the date of this will be advised to you at the start of the course, and will be an evening session. After attending this session and having met the requirements of module 4, you will then be re-classified as a level 7 or youth referee(age dependent).
The total course fee of £129 includes all appropriate study materials, a full Referees starter pack (this includes a full referees uniform, notebook and cards, whistle with lanyard and a set of assistant referee flags), cost of both Safeguarding Children Workshop and The FA CRB Enhanced Check. After completing module 5 candidates can apply to The FA for a partial course re-fund of £30. Also while refereeing the games in module 4 you will receive a trainee referee’s match fee and travel expenses to and from the games. The referees starter pack is given to the candidate after he has passed the examination on module 3.
Norfolk County FA also offers additional incentives to those who officiate authorised games to the effect that, in their second and third seasons, a £50 bonus is awarded after refereeing 15 games in each of these seasons.
