Norfolk FA - taking football forward in Norfolk

Representative Squads

Norfolk County FA runs two representative teams with one at the Under 18’s Youths' level and a team in the Women’s open age section.

Both of the squads participate in the East Anglian Counties Championship where seven counties from all over the Eastern Region compete on a league basis.

To represent your County is a considerable honour and the Norfolk squads are drawn from the many hundreds of teams competing all over the area. As expected the standard of football is very high and competition for places is very healthy.

With the women’s game going from strength to strength and with no fewer than 22 adult women’s clubs which equates to 26 teams competing within the County, competition for a representative place is harder than ever. Standards have always been high within the male youth ranks and gaining selection for the representative squad is no mean achievement.

The Norfolk County FA Representative management team hold separate trial and selection evenings for each potential squad and this is followed by at least one friendly match against local opposition to see the players as a unit. Furthermore the management team will then visit as many games as possible to see the players compete in their own environment.

For many players moving into senior football from school representative and junior ranks the transition can be very difficult. The reason is not because of their playing ability but in understanding that where the competition has always been from their peer age group in the past. Within the women’s open age for example you may be competing for a place with a player 10 years your senior! This should be viewed as a positive, however, as the younger players will learn from the experience and hopefully become the regular players for the future, helping ensure a more long lasting success.

For the Under 18’s, their time with us is very short and therefore encouraging the younger players and giving them a taste of representative level football alongside the more experienced players becomes increasingly important for future seasons.

Whatever this season brings we sincerely hope that everyone involved within the Norfolk County FA Representative system enjoys their experience and represents the county of Norfolk with pride.
