The Norfolk Primary Cup Final Match preview

Norfolk County FA
This year's Norfolk Primary Cup Final is a repeat of last Season's as Gayton United Reserves face Celt Rangers.

This year’s Norfolk Primary Cup will be contested between Gayton United Reserves and Celt Rangers at the FDC, Field of Dreams on Friday 29th March (KO 7:30pm).

Gayton United Reserves are last season’s Primary Cup Winners, coming out on top after 90 minutes against Celt Rangers 2-1. This season the two clubs meet in the Final again and by no means will the contest be any less thrilling.

This season, at the time of writing, Gayton United Reserves are currently in 11th place on 25 points. Despite this they have 7 games in hand on some teams above them. They have scored 45 goals and conceded 42, giving them a positive goal difference of 3. As for the Cup this season neither of the two finalists has had an easy run, however out of the two, Gayton United Reserves have had a slightly more comfortable set of results.

In the First Round Gayton got a Bye but the Second Round followed soon enough. The Second Round saw Gayton face Hungate Rovers in a massive 8-0 away win. In the Third Round Gayton faced Feltwell United at home and beat them comfortably 3-0. In the Fourth Round Gayton came up against opponents Norton Athletic in a game where they conceded their first Cup goal in a 3-1 home win. A crucial win sending them through to the Quarter Finals. In the Quarters Gayton travelled away to Bridgham United and again didn’t concede, dispatching them 2-0. The Semi-Final was the second game that Gayton conceded in, beating Dussindale Rovers 3-1 in a tight game that finished 1-1 after 90 minutes. Gayton United showed both character and quality in their Cup Run and will be looking to retain the Norfolk Primary Cup trophy against last year’s opponents.

As for Celt Rangers, last season’s runners up, they have showed great resilience by getting back into the Primary Cup Final and dominating their League football at the same time.

After being promoted from the Lowestoft & District League Division 3 last year, this season again Celt Rangers are top of the league. They are 2 points clear on 54 points having played one less game as 2nd place Carlton Colville Town and 2 less games than 3rd and 4th place Waveney and Mariners. They have scored 112 goals and conceded only 9 times in double the games, giving them a huge goal difference of 103 with 2 games left in the season. Having played 18 games and won 18 in the league they will be coming into this final with a great deal of confidence.

As for their Cup run, the same as Gayton they made it to the Second Round after a First Round Bye. In the Second Round Celt Rangers faced Bar 33 at home and like Gayton thrashed their opponents 8-0. In the Third Round Celt Rangers came out victorious against UEA A in a 5-2 away win. In the Fourth Round they travelled away to Longham with another comfortable away win, this time 6-2 the score line. In the Quarter Finals they played their third consecutive away game in the Cup at Loddon United. This was a closer game where again they conceded twice, the game ending 4-2. In the Semi Finals Celt Rangers faced Holt United at home in a battling contest that ended 3-2, a hard fought win that secured their place in the Final for the second year running.

Let’s hope for a fantastic game of football!
