Match Preview: The Norfolk Veterans Cup Final!

This season’s Final of the Norfolk Veterans Cup will be contested between Horsford and Tavern Old Boys on Friday 3 May 2019 (7:30pm KO). Both teams compete in the Leathes Prior Veterans League Premiership.

Last year the Final was held at the FDC’s Field of Dreams and was a good battle that saw Cringleford Veterans beat Horsford 4-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Darren Huckerby. Horsford will therefore be looking to go one better this year and lift the trophy. Having lost in the Semi-Finals in previous year’s this is Tavern Old Boys’ first appearance in the Final.

Horsford have been crowned champions in the League being 14 points clear at the top after all matches have been played. They won the title having not dropped points all season and having a goal difference of +37, the best in the League. After receiving a bye in the First Round, Horsford started their cup run away to Mulbarton Wanderers who they comfortably beat 4-0. The Third Round saw them welcome League One side, The Unthank Arms to The Nest who they beat 4-1. In the Quarter-Finals they were back on their travels, this time to Championship side Easton St Faiths where they scored three with no reply. The Semi-Final saw them host previous Finalists, Thetford Town. It was a close match but Horsford managed to progress to the Final by scoring the only goal of the game.

In the League, Tavern Old Boys currently sit in Second place but can drop to third if results go against them. Similarly to Horsford, Tavern Old Boys received a bye in the First Round. In the Second they travelled to League Two side, Harts Veterans where they kept a clean sheet and scored the most goals of the Round with 16. The Third Round saw them welcome Micawbers Tavern, a game that they won 4-1. Their Quarter-Final match was arguably the most entertaining game of the entire competition so far as they required extra-time to come past previous winners Cringleford Veterans 7-6 after drawing 4-4 after 90 minutes. They reached their first Final comfortably after beating Norton Athletic 4-0 at home.

It promises to be an exciting game!
