The Harrod Sport Women’s Cup 2021-22

The Harrod Sport Women’s Cup is one of the newest Norfolk County Cup competitions, out of the eleven being held this year. The first final of the Women’s Cup took place in the 2010-11 season, replacing the Norfolk & Suffolk Women’s Cup that had run for 12 years prior. For the first four years that it ran, the competition was dominated by Norwich City Ladies until Eastern Region Women's Football League side Acle United beat Thorpe United the following year.

This year’s final sees Mulbarton Wanderers face Wymondham Town. It will be Mulbarton’s second appearance at Carrow Road this season, with their Men’s First team lifting the Ashtons Legal Senior Cup on Monday. The final will kick off at 7:45pm and tickets are CARD PAYMENT ONLY due to Carrow Road being a CASHLESS stadium.

Mulbarton have enjoyed an unbeaten run this season in the league and as such they have been crowned champions of Norfolk Women & Girls Football League, Division One. Much like their Men’s side, the Wanderers will be looking for cup final glory, especially after their 7-0 defeat to Norwich City in last year’s final. The team enjoyed walkover victories in the second and third rounds of the cup before defeating last year’s champions, Norwich City, on penalties in the quarter-final. The final step in their quest to Carrow Road saw a 1-0 away win against King Lynn Town.

When asked about the final, Mulbarton Manager, Martin Francis, said: “We are very aware of how fortunate we are and the value of being involved in such a game, considering the level of competition and the strong challenges we’ve had to overcome to reach this stage. This is the highest level competition we are in, so to progress and now be able to compete in such a prestigious game is huge. We’ve worked so hard in getting here and we’ll be doing exactly the same to perform in the game and give a good representation of the team and hopefully make the club proud.”

Wymondham have also enjoyed league success finishing 12 points clear at the top of the table in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League, Premier Division. An impressive quarter-final performance saw Town defeat Thetford Ladies 6-1 in order to progress to the semi-final. Their journey to Carrow Road was complete following a 2-0 victory over Dussindale & Hellesdon Rovers. Wymondham will attempt to enjoy the same success in this year’s Harrod Sport Women’s Cup Final as their two previous final appearances, where they were crowned champions in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Wymondham Town Manager, Alex Guy, spoke about the final: “The County Cup is a prestigious competition, and it was one of the primary aims this season to win the County Cup again. Having won it twice before and reached the final, that was not able to be played due to Covid-19, we are excited to be in the final this year and competition to be County Cup champions.”
