Thorpe United secure the Norfolk Women's Cup

A first half goal from Rebekah Lake and a sucker punch from Vivian Moyo three minutes from time secured back to back triumphs for Thorpe United in the

Both sides struggled to make an impact early on in a tentative start the match, Thorpe midfielder Alice Ford and Wymondham’s Laura Wiseman missing two good opportunities inside the opening quarter of an hour.

Thorpe began to settle into the game, edging the possession and having most of the ball in the opposition half. A fantastically weighted through ball found Rebekah Lake who shrugged off her defender and chipped the onrushing Ashleigh O'Callaghan, and could have scored again soon after but the striker failed to find the target.

Wymondham looked to respond almost instantly, with Amber Cantwell hooking her set-piece into the box but Bethany Fretwell couldn’t direct her glancing header towards goal. Laura Wiseman was then played through just a few minutes later, but her effort was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Cara Anderson.

Half time: Wymondham Town 0 - 1 Thorpe United

Wymondham started the brighter of the two sides in the second half, with Laura Nicholls unable to dispatch a golden opportunity as a deflected shot fell straight to the feet of the winger who couldn’t keep her shot on target from 8 yards.

Fifteen minutes later, Nicholls once again found herself in a dangerous area but couldn’t quite get her shot off, with the resulting loose ball falling to Laura Wiseman whose shot strayed just wide of the post.

Wymondham began to press and get players forward, however with every passing opportunity became more frustrated as Thorpe United defended nobly. Wiseman and Gemma Sanders both had great chances to equalise for the Reds, however Anderson’s proactive goalkeeping kept the scores level.

Thorpe looked to capitalise on Town’s frustration in the last ten minutes. Laura Hedtke’s glancing header looked destined to find the back of the net, however Wymondham goalkeeper Ashleigh O’Callaghan’s reflexes kept the ball out. With the game deep in extra time, a through ball found Thorpe striker Vivian Moyo who took the ball around the goalkeeper and tapped into an empty net as United won back to back Women’s Cups!
