Freethorpe FC Walk to Wembley

Freethorpe FC's 'Walk to Wembley' Campaign

Club members of Freethorpe FC will join forces in January to raise money for the club after it lost over £2000 in an online scam.

The local grassroots football club fell victim to a malicious online phishing scam over the summer which resulted in them losing over two thirds of their capital. They are now trying to recoup the funds as well as raise awareness of the importance of internet safety via their ‘Walk to Wembley’ event.

On January 21 2018, Freethorpe players, coaches, managers, officials and friends and family will take to the club’s pitches to walk a combined 1000 laps of the playing field, totalling 266 miles – the distance from Freethorpe to Wembley and back.

Local residents and supporters of the club and its campaign are encouraged to come along and get involved as they host a number of other fundraising games as well as selling hot food and drinks. There will also be a raffle and an auction to purchase signed memorabilia with all proceeds going to Freethorpe FC.

A Just Giving page has been set up for the event and those wishing to sponsor the club and support them in their endeavor to recoup the stolen funds can do so by visiting: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/freethorpefcwalktowembley

Marcus Smith, Chairman of Freethorpe FC said: "We were devastated to learn of the online scam which has a direct impact on the football club and its ability to provide football for the local children and adults alike. However, we hope by raising awareness we can help to prevent other clubs and organisations succumbing to similar scams which are prevalent in today's society.

“As a result of the loss our club faces some tough challenges but we are all totally committed to recouping as much of the money as we possibly can through various fundraising events and our 'Walk to Wembley' on Sunday 21 January 2018."

Michael Banham, Chairman of Norfolk County FA said: “While the internet and the digital age has its many advantages, Freethorpe FC’s unfortunate situation highlights the risks involved and the importance of remaining vigilant online.

“I commend Marcus and everybody at the club for doing all they can to raise awareness of these dangers as well as organising such a fantastic event in order to get back on their feet. We at Norfolk FA will do all we can to assist in promoting their cause via our many communication channels as well as supporting their efforts on the day.”
