Tonight sees the first of the Norfolk Senior Cup semi-finals take place and once again this season's fixtures will be held at The Football Development Centre's 'Field of Dreams' venue in Bowthorpe, Norwich.
It will be the recent foes Norwich United & Dereham Town who battle it out this evening and who will play the winners of next week’s semi-final
between Downham Town and Wymondham Town. The two teams have a local rivalry as well as a recent few meetings in the Norfolk Senior Cup competition.
Norwich United ply their trade in the
Bostik League Division One North and are currently near the foot of the table
in 21st. After narrowly missing out on the play offs last year, they've endured a difficult season having a bad start and finding it difficult to recover from six straight league defeats. A good spell over the Christmas period and into January saw United go seven unbeaten, however they have unfortunately met another slump in form since.
The planters have fared much better in the Senior Cup this season, having picked up wins against Sheringham and King’s Lynn Town. Tonight they will be hoping to reach the final for the fifth time.
Dereham Town also compete in the Bostik Division One North but are better placed currently sitting 7th. The Magpies are a club that are no
strangers to winning the Norfolk Senior Cup having won it on four previous occasions, the most recent being two seasons ago against tonight's opponents, Norwich
United. Both teams also met in the 3rd round of the Senior Cup last season where
Norwich United had the upper hand in a 4-2 victory.
Town have had
a very good season to date currently sitting in 7th place and even spent a brief spell at
the top of the division. They have a very good chance of finishing in the
play-off places with 11 games to go.
On paper, league position would suggest that it's the Magpies that have the edge for this fixture, however on the pitch, recent form would indicate that tonight could go either way.
Let's hope for an exciting semi-final!
