‘Resilience in Refereeing’ Evening

Thursday February 3rd marks Time to Talk Day, a worldwide celebration of how sharing our thoughts with friends, family and colleagues can help us all, in whatever circumstances and challenges we face. As part of the day, you can attend an event entitled, 'Resilience in Refereeing'.

The FA’s Referee Mental Health Champion scheme was launched last year, and Norfolk’s Champion is Callum Parke. Callum has been an active referee for almost a decade, currently operating as a Level 3 both in the East and the East Midlands.

The aim of a Referee Mental Health Champion is to create an open environment so that everyone involved in the refereeing community in Norfolk can talk openly about mental health and be supported. Callum champions the importance of mental wellbeing, encourages conversations and acts as points of contact for any match officials aged 18 or over experiencing mental health problems, helping to signpost towards professional support services if required.

Callum is hosting an evening entitled ‘Resilience in Refereeing’ on Thursday 3 February, at 7pm where he will be accompanied by some refereeing colleagues around the county to discuss how match officials look after their mental health as well as sharing advice on the subject.

The event will showcase the stories of four referees from around the county, about how they have come back from setbacks and disappointments on the pitch and how talking to others off it has helped them bounce back. The confirmed guest speakers, subject to appointments, are:

  • Lee Betts: FIFA and Select Group 1 Assistant Referee
  • Tracey Clayton: Level 6 County Referee
  • Dan Robothan: Select Group 1 Assistant Referee
  • Tim Sadler: National Futsal and Level 5 Senior County Referee

The event is virtual and free and gives you a fantastic opportunity to learn from some of the best officials in the country. The night will hopefully be a brilliant learning opportunity for all about how to recover from setbacks on and off the pitch.
