Glittering Galaxy lift Sunday Junior Cup

GY Galaxy lifted the Sunday Junior Cup at the FDC on Sunday, after a convincing 4-1 victory over Mischief.

The game kicked off to the iconic sound of the vuvuzela - just one feature amongst a large following of supporters for both teams.

The sides were evenly matched in the opening portion of the game, with every ball fiercely competed for and little by way of early goal scoring opportunities.

As the opening quarter of an hour progressed, The Galaxy were starting to edge possession and showed glimpses of promise.

First George Barnden curled a shot over the bar from 20 yards, then Benny Lawrence flashed a ball across the face of goal.

Next Jamie Long whipped a free kick onto the roof of the net, before Daniel Goodrum nudged a header just over the far post.

Mischief weathered the spell of Galaxy pressure, but the team from Great Yarmouth were soon posing questions of their rearguard again.

In the 22nd minute Ash Goodrum rose highest in the box and saw his looping header bounce off the bar and over.

However, a minute later the deadlock was finally broken, when Mark Sutton confidently found the back of the net from close range, after meeting the ball as it travelled across the box at pace.

The Galaxy continued to look the more dangerous of the two sides, with Ash Goodrum turning smartly and firing a shot over the bar just after the half hour mark.

In contrast, Mischief – whilst not bring overrun – were struggling to make the ball stick up front and therefore found themselves camped in their own half.

They did however show signs of promise as the first half neared its conclusion, forcing a series of set pieces in the final third, which suggested the second period might be a closer affair.

However The Galaxy doubled their lead within seconds of the re-start, when Barnden rose highest at a corner to power a header past Nick Johnson in the Mischief goal.

Then, in the 54th minute, The Galaxy effectively sealed their victory when Lawrence pounced on the loose ball and finished from close range, after Johnson had initially made a stunning reaction save.

Just after the hour mark Sutton scored his second of the game, after The Galaxy has again worked an opening for the number 9 to finish from close range.

In the 78th minute an outstanding diving block from Mischief’s Ed Myers denied Ash Goodrum, whose volley from 8 yards looked a certain goal.

There was time before the end for Mischief to score a consolation, with Myers rounding Daniel Frost and slotting into the net in added time, to rapturous applause from the ‘Chief’ supporters.
