Match Preview: The Norfolk Junior Cup in association with Ball Launcher!

This season’s Norfolk Junior Cup Final, in association with Ball Launcher, will be contested between Gorleston Reserves and Sprowston Athletic on Wednesday 1 May 2019 (7:30pm KO).

Both teams compete in the Anglian Combination League, Division Two. They finished the season occupying the top two positions in the League. They have met twice in the League this season with both teams winning a game each. In the Cup both sides required extra-time to come past their opponents in the Semi-Finals, showing that the quality of this year’s Junior Cup has been very high.

Gorleston Reserves ended up League winners after being in second place for most of the season. As for their Cup run, they began against a good Belton side and beat them 4-0 which set up a Third Round match against AFC Lynn Napier. An 8-0 win against AFC Lynn Napier meant they faced Yelverton Reserves who they beat 3-0. They travelled to face UEA Reserves in the Quarter-Finals and beat them by scoring the only goal of the game. To reach the Final they needed penalties to come past Heacham after drawing 1-1 after 120 minutes.

In the League, Sprowston Athletic won promotion after Gorleston Reserves won on the last day of the season to beat them to the Division Trophy. After receiving a bye in the First Round they hosted Easton Reserves who they beat 7-2. After coming past Norton Athletic and Castle Acre Swifts in the Third and Fourth Rounds respectively they faced last year’s winners, Dussindale Rovers, in the Quarter-Finals. A 2-1 away win against the holders meant they only had to beat Gayton to reach Carrow Road. After drawing at 90 minutes, Sprowston were able to score two unanswered goals in extra-time to set up the Final.
