The Ashtons Legal Junior Cup Final

Either Wells Town FC or Reepham Town FC will lift the Ashtons Legal Junior Cup this season.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Wells travelled to Briston and returned home with a 7-0 victory. Another away trip in the third round to Heacham Reserves proved a tougher test as Ross Brewster scored the only goal of the game to give his side the win. Home victories in the fourth round against Easton Reserves and Norwich CEYMS Reserves respectively, set up a tricky semi-final clash with fellow Anglian Combination Division 2 side, Gayton United. After a 1-1 draw, the seaside-based outfit reached the final after winning 5-4 on spot-kicks.

Wells Town Manager, Craig Rutland was asked how he feels ahead of the game: “It’s brilliant for the Club really. I don’t think anyone really thought we would get here ever again to be honest. We were last in the Final in 1997 when we won it and my father was a big part of it as he scored four goals! For me personally I played at Wells for years and we never got this far so a chance to manage the team in the Final is brilliant. To have this opportunity to win the Junior Cup is pretty massive for the Club to be fair.”

Similarly to Wells, Reepham received a bye in the first round. Two home victories in the second and third against Yelverton Reserves and Tavern Old Boys handed them a trip eastward to play Birchwood. After a goalless 90 minutes, the Robins kept their composure from 12 yards to progress winning 5-4 on penalties. A 3-0 triumph in the quarter-finals against KLSC and a 2-0 victory versus Hopton in the semi-final means that Reepham reach the final having not conceded a goal in the whole competition.

Reepham Town Manager, Tom Stewart spoke his feelings towards the final: “Ecstatic with what we have done at the football club. We’ve turned things around and the boys dug deep in the semi-final and got us the result. It’s a pretty fantastic feeling really knowing that you are going to a County Cup Final.”
