Norfolk FA take part in 3K-a-day

Norfolk County FA staff are kickstarting 2023 in the most positive way by running, walking, or cycling 3k per day in support of Norfolk & Waveney Mind.

Norfolk and Waveney Mind are Norfolk’s local mental health charity and while they are part of the Mind network, they are an independent charity and raise their own funds. Each year the demand for Norfolk and Waveney Mind’s services increases as more and more people seek support for their mental health.

Alex Wiseman of Norfolk & Waveney Mind said: “Thank you so much to the team at Norfolk FA for agreeing to take part in our 3K Per Day Challenge. As Norfolk and Waveney’s leading mental health charity, we support thousands of local people every year through our wide range of services and support programmes. Each year the demand for our services increases as more and more people seek support for their mental health.

“By taking part in this challenge Norfolk FA are helping us ensure that no one has to face poor mental health alone, whilst also helping us to raise awareness and reduce the stigma associated with mental health. Thanks to the team for taking part and all their supporters for donating money.”

With up to 84% of people experiencing a mental health problem at some point in their lifetime, the need for good quality mental health support, advice and information is greater than ever before. By working together, we can build healthier, more resilient workplaces and communities.

Matt Carpenter, Chief Executive of Norfolk County FA added: “It’s great that as a workforce we can support our charity partners to raise vital funds for the work they carry out. Committing to something every day for a whole month is no mean feat and with a total mileage of over 1,300 kilometres between all the staff members taking part, it is sure to be a challenge!

“Norfolk & Waveney Mind undertake so much important and fantastic work to support the mental health of local people and I would ask anyone who is able to, please do take part in the 3k-a-day challenge or alternatively, donate to Norfolk & Waveney Mind to support the mental health of local people.”

How can physical activity help my mental health?

There are many studies which have shown that doing physical activity can improve mental health. For example, it can help with:

  • Better sleep – by making you feel more tired at the end of the day.
  • Happier moods – physical activity releases feel-good hormones that make you feel better in yourself and give you more energy.
  • Managing stress, anxiety, or intrusive and racing thoughts – doing something physical releases cortisol which helps us manage stress. Being physically active also gives your brain something to focus on and can be a positive coping strategy for difficult times.
  • Better self-esteem – being more active can make you feel better about yourself as you improve and meet your goals.
  • Reducing the risk of depression – studies have shown that doing regular physical activity can reduce the likelihood of experiencing a period of depression.
  • Connecting with people – doing group or team activities can help you meet new and like-minded people and make new friends.
